Question: 1989 Mitsubishi Lancer mileage: 70,900.  This morning, my check engine light came on and stayed on.  I don't know what's wrong with it.  This is my first car.  I tried to take it to a repair shop, but was told to take it to a Mitsubishi dealership.  Do dealerships fix cars also or should I just take it to a different repair shop?

Answer:  Try a different repair shop that has the proper equipment.  The “check engine” light will “light” when there is a malfunction in the engine management system.  The fault code is then stored in the computer.  The computer must be scanned to retrieve these stored faults to pinpoint the malfunctioning component.   Because the check engine light indicates something is wrong, a trip to you neighborhood automobile service center sooner rather than later is recommended. Dealerships do repair cars well considering their expertise and model specific equipment however they are the most costly alternative.

Question: 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier mileage: 80,000. If you like a good mystery you'll enjoy this question. My Cavalier drives along smoothly at 55 mph on level ground but as soon as I start to take it up a hill it cuts back to around 35 mph. I can even get a running start at 65 mph, but the car does the same thing, it bogs down on the uphill incline. The following things have been tested or replaced all to no effect. The engine compression is good, the vacuum is good, and spark is good. A diagnostic machine shows everything is in good order. I have replaced the fuel filter, catalytic converter, muffler, the map sensor and also the idle air control valve. I changed the transmission filter and replaced the fluid. I replaced the air filter. I checked the egr valve to assure that it was functioning properly. The computer has been replaced and that didn't help the problem either. Please help before
the guys in white coats come to take me away!

Answer: It sounds like a fuel pump is starting to fail. It is common for fuel pumps to fail at the mileage your car has on it. Install a fuel pressure gage and monitor the pressure when you are going up the incline. Replace fuel pump and fuel strainer (attached to the bottom of the fuel pump) with new to repair problem if you are losing fuel pressure.

Question: 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 3800 , mileage: 158,000. I recently was tightening my positive battery cable when I touched the alternator at the same time. It shot off sparks and burned part of the alternator blade. I tried starting the car afterwards. The first three or four times it started but it kept putting out. Now it wouldn’t start. It turns over fine as if it wants to start but it wouldn’t fully start. If you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer:  Unfortunately, computerized vehicles do not like that -- there are a number of things that could have occurred: 1. Burned out alternator diodes (causing the alternator to charge AC voltage, the car will not run on AC voltage.) Take the drive belt off and try to start (if it does run shut it off so it doesn’t over heat). Replace the alternator; 2.. Check all fusible links and fuses; if these check okay, it could have burned out the PCM (computer).
